Both dog-legs were bad on my latest Rebuild/Restore. I bought the replacement panels from Moss. I was very surprised that the panels were not an exact match. Luckily I now a very good welder. He cut the new panels at the edge where they make the 90 degree edge, he then slowly tacked the main portion of the panel on walking it towards the edge that he split - the split widening as he did so. Once he finished walking the tacks to the edge he went back filled the welding. With that down he slowly welded the split back together. Grind everything down, a VERY light Bondo Wipe to smooth things back out and he was done. Looks great.

Hi, thanks for the info. I had seen some comments that some of the repair panels were a crummy fit. I think I had seen that Steelcraft branded panels are a better fit, so have found a couple of them, hoping a friend is going to drop them in his luggage when he visits from the UK shortly. Its great to see what pro can do with his welder, some tools, and a pile of skill/experience.

While I've turned wrenches for a LOT of years, since I retired I'm back in the learning mode. When the local body (thief) shop owner tried to rape me on this car, my nephew convinced me that I could learn to MIG weld. So Harbor Freight 180 amp MIG unit $280, cart, gas reg., bottle, etc. for less than $500 I was in business. The body shop wanted 11 hours @ $60 an hour to remove and replace 1 floor panel. I got the spot weld cutter from Harbor Freight for $6 cut the panel out, got a pneumatic punch from HF for $50 punched holes ever inch around the panel. I placed the panel in used a few self drilling screws to hold down and in place and welded the holes closed creating new spot welds. Repeated the process for the other floor panel and both rocker panels, inner and outer. That's 6 panels amazingly at 11 hours apiece all at $60 an hour or $3960 plus tax! Oh and both my nephew and my new friend (the welder) have threatened to steal my HF MIG welder, say its a good machine.

Post your email. If you want free knowledge from a Mechanical Engineer, who has owned his MGB since 1983 (79,000 miles.) Yes, I had to do only one replacement panel, back in 1983. The repair panel was not very good in those days.Ever since, the MGB has always been garaged, with the Mercedes outside.The best method is to put 1/4 inch holes ever 3 to 6 inches on the panel, so the welder can spot weld the panel into place. I rarely use a disk sander. I use a Straight-Line Pneumatic Sanders.
