Took a week off to enjoy the Oregon coast and came back to a box of parts from Basil, namely brake parts and a new water pump.
Decided to take a stab at removing the hubs so that I could get the back plates off. Read up on some archived posts for a few hints. One stood out and that was from our esteemed Ernie Y. He said to whack the axle shaft and the hub would pop out. So, out came the lead dead-blow hammer from my wire wheels and with the castellated nut threaded on the end of the shaft, a couple raps and the hub did indeed pop off!
With the back plates off, I removed the cylinders and the adjusters but one of the studs snapped off one adjuster. Wishing I had a media blast cabinet to clean up parts...I might just degrease them, sand them and etch prime and paint.
Moved on to the front of the car and decided to install the new water pump. I’ll reuse the new hoses, clamps and radiator out of the wrecked ‘70.
Dropped the brake drums off at a shop to get them turned a bit. They weren’t horrible but 34 years of sitting around in a garage left some surface corrosion and some slight scoring. All new springs, retainers, cylinders, hoses and brake shoes await. Lots to do.
