With the OD unit separated from the gearbox, and disassembled into sub-assemblies, all parts were thoroughly cleaned with carb cleaner and dried. I got the gears in the planet carrier lined up, the rest of the parts went back together reasonably well. A light coat of black Permatex on the casing flanges went on and it was time to see if I could mate the unit back with the gearbox. I watched how easy it looked when John Twist did it but he prefaced his remarks with “It could take 5 seconds or 5 hours”.
Well, it did not take 5 seconds and my patience level wouldn’t last 5 hours. I could not get that #$@&*$# to slide all of the way on no matter how many times I carefully lined up the splines. I decided to let it sit for a day or two and come back to it when I’m prepared to deal with more frustration.
