I had a little time this afternoon and then again after dinner so today’s accomplishments were finishing some painting around the gearbox tunnel so that I could get the DEI heat shield installed and a little prep work on the horn terminal replacement. I had already cut and fit the heat shield awhile back but wanted to get the engine bay all painted before I crawled back under there to stick it on. Some light touch up with the aerosol can and a good wipe down with some acetone and I was able to stick it on and finish the edges with some of DEI’s tape to seal it all up.
Not the most fun job laying on the concrete floor but it came out pretty good and should reflect some of the heat from the Bell SS exhaust that will go on at some point.
As far as the horn terminal goes, I decided to drill out the rivet head and see about finding a way to affix the new double spade terminal that will be showing up in a week or so. Once the rivet head was off, I was left with the plastic insulator and the hollow tube portion of the rivet which was still attached internally. I used a small brass screw that I turned into a stud, inserted it into the tube, soldered it in, slipped the insulator back over the stud and cinched it down with a brass nut. When the new terminal arrives, I’ll slip it over the stud and put another nut with some more solder and it will be good to go. I tested the horn after the repair and it still functions. I didn’t want to take the horn apart as I just finished painting it so I’m pleased with the external fix.
