or to vote for this car or leave a comment

  • 3rd (and final?) restoration to celebrate impending 40th year of ownership completed 2009

  • Engine bay completed October 2010

  • Restoration #3 well underway

  • Australian Market only," J & S" hardtop

  • Everything where it ought to be, just like the guys at Abingdon said.

  • Same guy, same car, but both just a bit younger in 1973.

  • Australian CKD car. Completed September 1965, road registered October 1965.

  • A lot of MGB's seem to have poorly aligned boot (trunk) lids, either sitting proud of the aperture, or touching the aperture in one or both rear bottom corners.. Mercifully not this one.

  • Fitting up engine bay. Sandblasting had proved to be the only viable way to completely strip awkward to access areas such as the cavities accessed towards the top rear of the inner front guards (fenders).

  • Boot (trunk) floor finally needed replacing in 2020. British Motor Heritage "made on original tooling" floor was of disappointing quality, needing corrections.

“Dad's Little White Car”
This was my first car! I bought it on the 17th of January 1970 when I was 17 years old. That's over 55 years ago now!
I just never got around to selling it, even when serious rust broke through, family came along, and life moved on. I could simply never bring myself to part with it, even when I was approached (occasionally repeatedly) by others to sell my MGB to them.

For many years this was my every day "driver", though these days it's used much less frequently. Despite this it's well on its way round the odometer for the third time! I still jump into it and do the occasional commute to and from work with it, or run off to the shops for something in it. It starts every time without fail and never lets me down.

Beautifully restored by an eccentric genius in 2005- 2006 by which time it was frankly terminal in terms of body corrosion. By this time the car had been subjected to several dreadfully poorly done previous rust repairs by "crafstmen" working with copious helpings of chicken wire and body filler.

Mechanically on the other hand it has always been utterly reliable and oil tight (and weather tight), with just routine maintenance, one engine re-bore/rebuild but now three gearbox rebuilds in around 250,000 miles.

I never understood, (and still don't) why people bag out these cars as being unreliable, oil-leak and over-heating prone, needing constant attention. I'd without hesitation jump into my MGB and drive across our vast continent instantly if the need arose, confident that I'd reach my destination without the slightest problem. It would just feel like I was heading off on another adventure with my old friend.

Just as immaculate as the MGA Tom! Is the Jensen as smart? I take it, like me, you are living the eternal weekend yet working twice as hard and not getting paid!TonyC

The Jensen went in 1996 Tony. Prior to that I had been told by a gentleman who wrote a book on the Jensen Interceptor, (Richard Calver), that he thought my Interceptor was the best in Australia! I've unfortunately no idea where the car is today, nor what condition it might now be in.

The stylish hard top reminds of one for MGBs in UK I recollect they were "Bermuda tops" and, if correct, may have had a small see through sun roof as well (UK needed the sun). Have you ever re-rubbered the hard top, as I have one for the "A" and have access to the outer vinyl, have located the inner lining but have drawn a blank on the rubber sections - not so much locating them more what they look like, as the spares book is not clear. Do you have any thoughts on the matter Tom?

You can see the Bermuda tops here Tony:http://www.mgnuts.com/hardtops/mgb/The Bermuda tops wrap around the leading corners of the boot (trunk) lid like the J&S style top on my car, but I always thought the Bermuda tops looked a little bulbous and awkward. Some really like their style though.I've replaced the rubbers twice over the years on my J&S top. I think the company I used has ceased to trade. I think I'd now try:http://www.scottsoldautorubber.com.auBest of luck.

Thanks Bobby. This now rather old MGB remains a remarkable car: utterly reliable, and to this day, a joy to drive. Ill even do the car the honour of giving it a rating myself! Without hesitation its a 10 out of 10 car.

Both your MGB and MGA are unusually nice examples. And you deserve accolades for your loyalty to the marque!
