Rear Suspension Refresh

Last season I noticed a bit of rattling in my rear suspension. Checked and found the rear bushings and pads were very worn. With the help of my local MG club’s lift, put all new poly bushings in. Should be a lot smoother (and quieter) this season.

Up on the lift and ready to work.

Old axle hardware and pads removed.

All new hardware and poly bushings being installed.

New shackles and poly bushings in the rear.

Everything reassembled and ready for the road.

Added Hubcaps For Everyday Driving

When I added my steel wheels (for vintage racing events) I never intended to add any hubcaps. I was thinking more of switching back and forth between them and my original Rostyles for everyday driving. For the sake of argument, I looked around for an inexpensive set of hubcaps for the steel wheels, and someone here on MGEXP got back to me with a set at a reasonable price. Just added them today and I'm very pleased with the look - keeps the car looking very vintage. I still have my Rostyles, but I may never re-mount them at this point.

Minor change, but wanted to document when it occurred.

Vintage Racing/Rally Wheels

I attend and participate in a few vintage race/rally events each year, and have always admired the older Sprites and Midgets that attend. The old steel and wire wheels really make these racers look vintage. Decided last fall to try a set of old "steelies" on my car for these events. Went with matching the car color (white) instead of the original silver/grey and I'm thrilled with the final look. I actually won't mind when the wheels get a bit dirty - it will just add to the authenticity. Probably not everyone's taste, but I think they look super, and I can easily change back to my Rostyles when I want. Threw my rally numbers on for these quick beauty shots.

Love the bonnet open showing off the new dual carbs too!

New Dual HS4 Carbs Installed

After a few weeks of work and re-work, the dual HS4s are on and running! I’m amazed at the sound difference thru my custom exhaust. Can’t wait to hit the road this season and see how she does on the longer trips. Getting all the other stuff moved and sorted was more work than the carbs themselves.

Bench Rebuild Dual HS4 Carbs

I know these are all over the UK, but you don’t see a lot of these on US models. Most of the time you see Weber downdraft replacements, or the original Stromberg like on mine. I’ve rebuilt these will all new lines, fuel filter, Viton needles and seats, solid foam floats, new fixed jets, and some new linkage parts. All ready and waiting for a Spring install 2025.

Final set with new air cleaners and lines.

Replaced the original waxstat jets.

New Viton needles, seats, and foam floats.

New fixed jets installed. Body to be cleaned (not polished).

Replacing Rubber Bits

My sun visor clips and the rubber tips on my door window vents were dry rotted and shot. When I found out how easy it was to replace the window vent tips, I jumped into the visor clips unprepared. They are riveted into place, so the only option is to drill them out - but the gotcha is not to drill so deep that you accidentally hit the glass behind! Very cautiously removed the old and installed the new. Glad that job ended well.

Used small self-tapping screws for future replacements - hopefully the next owner (years from now) will think of me fondly.
